One of the hardest things to keep and maintain when studying for a computer certification - particularly when trying to juggle the demands of everyday life, is motivation. There are certifications which are long and arduous, and trying to find the time and the inclination to keep hitting the books can tax even the most determined person. However, motivation can also be one of the most powerful tools that you have at your disposal. You will succeed, if you are determined to do it.
• Goal setting – set your goal and then keep your mind concentrated on it. It is better to make your goals demanding enough to warrant effort on your part, but not too difficult that you’re likely to fail. You probably know that success breeds success, so start your goal setting off with easier tasks, and slowly increase the pressure as you get further along the certification track. For example, I can set the date of the exam before you’ve done any study. This means you have a fixed time to get ready for it. If you were to set the date after you’ve done the study, you’d never get the study done in the first place. Setting the examination date forces you to develop a study schedule. • Surround yourself with things that motivate you. You can have numerous posters in your study room of things that motivate you. For instance, that car you want, the Pacific Island you want to go to for a holiday. You may also hang all the certificates you’ve gained on the wall. Do not do it at work – you don’t need to get motivated there. It’s at home after a long day you need that inspiration, so the certifications you’ve already gained sit there above your computer and spur you on.
• Don’t let set backs get you down mentally. Of course, you will have both successes and failures. Focus on the successes, and don’t dwell on the failures. They will happen.
• Let yourself get excited by success, no matter how small. It is advised not to let other people’s lack of enthusiasm for your successes drag you down. Get excited with your own achievements, and surround yourself with people who have a positive attitude to success, particularly yours.
